With 5 p.m. sunsets, erratic temperatures and plenty of pollution, winters today are not for the faint at heart. These winters are far worse for people with winter depression and seasonal affective disorder (commonly known as SAD). The winter blues are very common, with many of us experiencing a mood shift during the colder, darker days of winter. You may find yourself feeling more lethargic and down overall. Although you may feel more gloomy than usual, the winter blues typically don’t hinder your ability to enjoy life. Several people turn to different activities to counter these effects, some prefer walking their DOG, others prefer staying in the SUN more often than normal and I, on the other hand, turn to another triple letter word for help : OIL.
To keep the mood up in these gloomy and cold months you can use a variety of essential oils. I can assure this with personal experience that these blends are a miracle. These magical oils not just help you tackle the Winter Blues but are also very helpful in keeping you cheerful during these winter breezes and sunless epoch. But with so many essential oils available on the market, it can be a little overwhelming to figure out which ones are best equipped to combat the dreariness, that is, winter. Depending on what specific symptoms you’d like to address, there are a variety of oils that can be employed.
For Winter Depression, in particular, essential oils with a citrus fragrance and an uplifting essence make great allies. You can always make blends based on your penchant towards the odours you wish to surround yourself with. Different blends could be used for different purposes, for example, as pre-bath/massage oils, bath oils, etc.
Now, here are some simple recipes to prepare these blends.
For Bath oil:
- 20 drops of Orange essential oil
- 2 drops of Patchouli essential oil
- 2 drops of Basil essential oil
- 100ml of almond essential oil.
These ingredients are mixed together and this well blended mixture is then ready to be used as a bath oil.
For body Scrub:
- 2 drops of lemon
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon dried and powdered orange peel
- 1 tablespoon dried and powdered rose petals
Add these together and the mixture is then ready to be used as a scrub. Apply this blend to your face and neck. Keep it on for 10 minutes and then scrub it off. Wipe your face and neck with warm water thereafter.
These are just a few of the many recipes from my diary, the most efficacious of the personally tested ones and the ones that’ll help you combat winter blues.
If you are, or have been, feeling low for quite some time, please start these home treatments at the earliest and also, speak to your doctor about your symptoms. Winter depression is a serious medical condition and aromatherapy is an ancient art of achieving human well-being. Essential oils certainly can’t replace medical care and attention. However, they can be an effective home remedy to support one’s healing through the journey of depression. Have a happy winter!
